Another thing I like about the Venom movie and its subversion of toxic masculinity is how, in Eddie’s apology to Anne, we see him multiple times start to give a sort of “half apology”, then correct himself.
He starts saying “I’m sorry if what I did hurt you”, but stops himself and changes it to “I’m sorry for what I did that hurt you.” The first one shifts the blame and doesn’t take responsibility, the second one does. He also starts saying “I’m sorry for whatever I did” and changes it to “I’m sorry for everything I did”. The first feigns ignorance about exactly what he did that was wrong, the second one openly accepts it.
It’s just so common to hear the “sorry that you misunderstood me” or “I’m sorry you got upset” apology and it’s nice not only to have gotten such a genuine one from Eddie, but also the acknowledgment of him overcoming the immediate urge to give a less sincere one and purposefully correcting himself.
