I cannot believe how many people are saying, “Trump can’t overturn the 14th Amendment by executive order! It’s against the rules!” Don’t you fucking get it yet? This is the dawn of fascism and the rules don’t fucking matter anymore. The rules haven’t mattered since the election! He’s going to continue to grab power, and he’s going to get away with it.
Even if it doesn’t happen, he’s encouraging white Americans to view everyone else as a ‘foreigner’ who doesn’t belong here, and thereby condoning even more violence against them.. That the news comes so soon after the Tree of Life shooting is just confirmation – within two years of coming to power, Hitler put out the Nuremberg Laws which ultimately led to stripping Jews of German citizenship.
The rules only matter if people are willing to follow them, which includes enforcing them. Nobody in charge wants to follow those rules, unless it’s to hamstring an opponent (see: Republicans literally trying to pay women to make sexual harassment claims against Mueller). So they’re going to break the rules, or change the rules, and they’re in high enough positions that no one can effectively do anything about it.
It was a good try at checks and balances. Obviously, it hasn’t really worked–there’s no provision for actually stopping the executive branch or preventing entanglement; quite the reverse, since legislators frequently go on to be presidents, presidents nominate the judicial branch, and the entire military is under control of the executive branch, which makes declarations of war and so on essentially a formality. Turns out having the oldest constitution in the world is like having the oldest computer security in the world–it’s dangerous, not something to be proud of.
“fascism doesn’t have effects if you don’t value it or empower it”, wow if only the people who didn’t learn to not compromise with fascism knew that you shouldn’t normalize it but go against it always
